As it's the norm in forex for most major currencies to be quoted from the U.S. dollar on a normal basis, cable is a widely used term.

Cable can also be used to refer only to the British pound sterling.

For example, you may hear someone addressing the forex market stating, The cable is up today, or, The cable has been trending lower lately.

The origins of this term are credited to the fact that in the 1800s, the dollar/pound sterling exchange rate was sent via transatlantic cable.

Forex brokers are sometimes referred to as cable traders.
